As I watched near the end of this year, the heart warming conclusion of the Amanda Knox murder case in Perugia, Italy, I found that I couldn't help but draw a parallel between what has happened to her and the millions who are now afflicted by the results of body weight issues. Both dramatic situations were the product of mistakes on the part of officials and governmental institutions we trusted with protecting the safety of the public in general.
The Amanda Knox case was concluded in her favourfavour. The battle for reducing the growth of the obesity epidemic is a long way from over. The institutions that have power to influence the public and the agencies responsible for this on what to do about obesity are still clinging to mistaken ideas on what should be done. The parallels are enlightening:
1. The Perugia Prosecutor felt that Amanda Knox was clearly involved in some wayclearly involved in some way in the murder and rape of her roommate and prosecuted her aggessively even in the face of robust probitive evidence of her innocence. Forty or so years back we were sent down the unfortunate path of more and more cases of obesity thanks to the mistaken proposal that diet fat was the root of body weight problems. We of course know now that sugar and carbs in our diet are the root of the obesity problems across the U.S. but this detour continues to hamper most U.S. government agencies from seriously addressing simple ways to cut down on carbs and sugar. The government continues to show lack of support for effective low carbohydrate diets like the Diet Solution Program.
2. As more probitive evidence was found to exonerate Amanda Knox, the prosecutor did not re-evaluatere-evaluate his position to protect his public image. A similar thing took place with the saturated fat proposal: agencies just could not make themselves consider seriously something new for concern that funding would dry up from agencies in favor of maintaining the current way of thinking.
3. The sufferers of the tragedy expanded rapidlyrapidly for the Amanda Knox case. Her extended family and associates, her boyfriend's and even the victim's families were affected. For the obesity pandemic the list of victims in addition has grown exponentially.
4. The last parallel is the characterization of the battle between those in power (in the wrong) and those with less power and influence, but armed with the most powerful weapon of all, the real truth. Amanda Knox just thankfully won her battle. We have got a long way to go on the battle over body weight problems.
We're going to We're going to win this obesity battle ultimately. To save face, the government and health establishments will quietly shift over to a low carbohydrate, moderate to high-fat diet as the perfect approach for controlling weight. It won't be the dramatic event we experienced with Amanda Knox. It will occur though, so stay tuned...
