What You Get From Strength Training

By Cole Harris

There are so many benefits from strength training. You get great muscles, happiness, and decreased risk for disease.

Strength training should be part of everyone's routine. It doesn't eat up much time since you only need to do it twice or thrice a week for an hour. For 2-3 hours per week, huge benefits can be realized.

With regular strength training, you will:

Help you in day to day activities around the house and in your yard. You won't have to depend on others to do things for you, which is especially significant for older folks. Think of how you would feel if you can't life five pounds without help.

Decrease your chance for developing osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Prevent lower back pain.

Increase bone density which is important for post menopausal women.

Increase muscle mass which burns more calories throughout the day than an equal amount of fat.

Even with all these benefits, many people are reluctant to start training with weights. Most are concerned with injuries and incorrect form, and many women don't want muscles for fear of looking unfeminine.

As a beginner, you can reduce your risk for injury by using machine weights rather than free weights. You progress to free weights when you are comfortable with the machines already. If you want to stick with the machines, know that they will give you the same benefits as free weights. And for the women, you don't need to worry about looking masculine since you won't be taking steroids.

Sometimes when we think of being healthy, we think of eating and running. Strength training is also important here. Strength training provides benefits to your health that cannot be found with any other mode of exercise and shouldn't be forgotten.
