Closed rib, hundred, half-roll backers beware! It's like working out on a big piece of gasket material. I will never use another mat other than this Manduka black mat pro! I just realized there are so many things out there that serve the same purpose for less the price. The mat is thicker, heavier and responsive to the body. Your feet feel both cradled and supported, while at the same time being firm enough to balance upon.
There is a huge difference from this mat and the standard yoga mat. Love how thick it is. I can easily bring it to classes with me, it has awesome grip both on the ground and on my hands and feet, and it is the perfect width for my boney joints. My yoga experience is so much better now that I have this mat.
The Manduka Black Mat has met and exceeded all my expectations. I can now perform many more poses that were uncomfortable on my "beginners" mat. Don't get me wrong: you can find much cheaper products that will totally do the trick. I've used those products for the past 6 years.
This new mat is truly a great product. It's much thicker and provides cushion and support.
If I accidentally lift it with my foot while moving around, it immediately settles back flat on the floor. The biggest and the most annoying negative feature is how much it slips. Yes, it does have a distinctive odor, but I don't find it overwhelming. This mat smells less than my other athletic items in the same closet, so I don't really mind.
If you bring your own mat you always know where it's been. Plus, owning your own mat may encourage you to begin valuable practice at home. Working out? I've never had a problem with slipping and it's super easy to clean/dry.
If you are planning on traveling with this mat be aware that it is heavy, so if it is a long way from the car to the studio it'll be some work. I purchased the Manduka BlackMatPRO about a month ago and I really do love it. I have high expectations for this mat. I don't have any complaints really.
It survived doing yoga on damp cement floors for a year in India...on dirt...jute, cleans up easily too. If I don't lose this one, it might be the last yoga mat I ever have to buy.
